This season, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will award a new first-time winner, much to Daniel Hemric’s dissatisfaction.
After a dramatic cutoff race on Saturday at the Charlotte Roval, Hemric, who took the victory in his debut series race in the title finale last season in Phoenix, was one of four racers ousted from the 2022 playoffs.
Hemric started the race on Saturday six points outside the transfer line needed to move on to the semifinal round.
His troubles began when he raced off the course on Lap 2 of 72, collided with the tyre barrier, and was required to make a green-flag pit stop for significant repairs. He began third in the race.
Fortunately, he was capable of keeping up racing in the contest, but Hemric was unable to do so and placed 17th overall.
Hemric, 31, finished in last place in the playoff rankings, five points behind Brandon Jones. Jones entered the semifinal round after taking the eighth and final transfer berth.
“I’m thankful to part of the NASCAR Xfinity Series. I was hoping to be able to go and defend my championship and carry on to the next round but made a mistake in (Turns) 3 and 4 there that you cannot make,” he said.
“And if you make those kinds of mistakes, you do not deserve to be here. So, got to go work, got to be mad at myself.”
Hemric’s first year of competition with Kaulig Racing in 2022 has been up-and-down for him. He has only led 66 laps this season, with his best result being third in Las Vegas (compared to 663 in his 2021 title season).
Jones, A.J. Allmendinger, Noah Gragson, Justin Allgaier, Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, Josh Berry, and Austin Hill are the only playoff racers still in the running for the championship; Hemric has been disqualified from further championship contention.
It’s anticipated that Allmendinger, Gragson, and Gibbs will all compete full-time in the Cup Series in 2023, thus this could be their final opportunity to take home the series championship.
When asked to name one memory during his tenure as series winner, Hemric responded, “I’ll probably play this Roval race back time and time again. That’s what this season kind of felt like. It’s been a little bit of a rough go.
“Everyone has been a winner that showed up on his race team and I’m proud of that. I want to thank Matt Kaulig (team owner) and Chris Rice (team president) for the call to come drive this thing (this year), they deserved better.”
