Due to constant lightning strikes and localised rainfall, Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway was called barely before the halfway point.
After multiple thunderstorms within an eight-mile radius of the racetrack, NASCAR was compelled to call a delay to the 300-lap race on lap 140. The racetrack was surrounded by powerful storms while in the thunder hold, and rain soon engulfed the area as well.
The midway point would be declared whenever the race completed 10 circuits. The balance of the race will be continued on Monday if Sunday night’s attempt to resume it is unsuccessful.
The action-packed finish of the race came when Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., and Ryan Blaney raced three-wide for the lead, with Hamlin coming out on top.
At the time of the interruption, Christopher Bell is in fifth place, followed by Truex, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Hamlin.
The race started at the regular time of 5 p.m. ET, but NASCAR was forced to issue a yellow on Lap 41 due to potential racetrack debris from Josh Bilicki’s No. 77 car, which seemed to be experiencing a power problem.
The race had to be stopped immediately after the caution was issued due to many lightning strikes close to the track. The wait was almost an hour long.
The lead-lap cars all pitted when the race resumed under caution, with Hamlin coming off pit road first.
In the end, Truex managed to hold off Hamlin, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, to clinch Stage 1.
