Tyler Reddick crashed into Victory Lane on Sunday, earning the NASCAR Cup race at Circuit of the Americas after having a difficult beginning of the year with his new squad.
In what was supposed to be a 68-lap race, Reddick and William Byron traded the lead for the most of the race before Reddick surged in front for the final time on lap 64.
Reddick’s breakthrough victory in the No. 45 Toyota of 23XI Racing at COTA came on Sunday, but to keep the win, he had to hold off persistent rivals in three two-lap overtimes.
Reddick was in the lead going into the last restart, and after Kyle Busch collided with Alex Bowman going into Turn 1, Reddick was able to maintain his lead all the way to the finish line without any further track problems.
Reddick eventually defeated Busch by 1.411 seconds to claim the victory for the fourth time in his career, three of which have been on road courses.
Reddick, who started the season wrecking out of the first two races, is continuing his miraculous comeback with the victory.
“It means the world. This whole 23XI team has been working so hard all winter long to make the road course program better. Was extremely motivated to come in here and prove that performance, too,” Reddick said.
“Toyota, everybody, all the resources they’ve been putting into this to help turn around the road course program means a lot. I’m out of gas.
“Unfortunately, we had some problems with the cool shirt. I felt that today. I screwed up Turn 1 about every single time. It’s good to turn it around and make it better at the end.”
Bowman came in third, Ross Chastain came in fourth, and Byron came in fifth.
Austin Cindric, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Chris Buescher, Ty Gibbs, and Todd Gilliland round out the top ten.
The highest result for the road course “ringers” that competed in the race on Sunday was 18th for veteran Formula 1 champion Jenson Button.
Former Formula 1 winner Kimi Raikkonen finished 29th after receiving a penalty for cutting the track on the final lap. Sportscar star Jordan Taylor, filling in for the injured Chase Elliott, was 24th.
