Max Verstappen of Red Bull has his doubts about what Mercedes is doing with their rear wings.
Max Verstappen agrees with his team boss Christian Horner that there is something “wrong” with the Mercedes rear wings.
Verstappen was beaten off the line by Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas in the Sprint Qualifying race at Interlagos, as the Finn chose the Soft tyre compound for the 24-lap race.
However, it was the performance of Lewis Hamilton that attracted Verstappen’s attention, with the Dutch driver observed touching the rear wing of Hamilton’s car in parc ferme after qualifying on Friday – a move that earned him an investigation and a €50,000 fine.
When asked what he noticed on the rear wing that caught his attention, Verstappen stated that Red Bull had had suspicions about that area of the Mercedes for some time.
“I just look at the rear wing and there is clearly something going on,” Verstappen said.
“We have our suspicions that something is going on there. At the beginning of the year, we all had to change our rear wings, with the pillar at the back of [it], basically.
“I think there’s something going on with the main plane that is opening up and giving them more top speed.”
In the championship standings, Verstappen now has a 21-point advantage over Hamilton.
