Joey Logano won the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington, putting an end to his struggles of the previous two weeks.
After finishing 29th in both Talladega and Dover, Logano’s No. 22 Penske squad required a boost.
He received one in the last round of testing on Saturday, when he set an aggregate track pace of 170.720 mph, which was just enough to beat off defending series winner Kyle Larson (170.236 mph) for the pole in Sunday’s race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.
His 23rd pole, but his first since the 2019 season.
“Oh, that was so much needed for all of us here. The last couple weeks have been pretty rough,” Logano said. “We had a couple crashes and weren’t very strong at Dover and coming here and recover at Darlington is really nice.
“This is huge. Track position here is really big but long-run speed means so much. We need to keep the long-run speed and it seemed like we were in the ballpark in practice. But it sure is nice to see the front right now and hopefully lead some laps.”
Christopher Bell came in third (169.818 mph), Martin Truex Jr. came in fourth, and Kyle Busch came in fifth.
Kurt Busch, Ryan Blaney, Ross Chastain, William Byron, and Tyler Reddick round out the top ten starting lineup.
Round 1 / Group B
Larson led the Group B session with an aggregate track pace of 171.130 mph as he exited near the finish.
Logano finished 3rd and Truex was 2nd (170.525 mph) (169.625 mph). Top-five finishers Blaney and Kurt Busch also progressed to Round 2.
Erik Jones, Austin Cindric, who was quickest in Saturday’s practise, and Denny Hamlin, who reported he had an engine problem throughout his qualifying drive, were among those who did not advance.
Chase Elliott didn’t try to qualify after crashing in practise earlier in the day.
Round 1 / Group A
Kyle Busch led Group qualifying with the best aggregate track pace (169.608 mph).
Byron finished third (169.054 mph) and Bell placed second (169.054 mph) (168.868 mph). Chastain and Reddick completed the top 5 and proceeded to Round 2 as well.
Busch remarked, “I’d love to do it again (in Round 2).” “I’m not sure what to do.” However, my Toyota Camry has excellent acceleration.”
Michael McDowell, Bubba Wallace, and Daniel Suarez were among the racers who did not advance from Group A.
Neither B.J. McLeod nor Kevin Harvick attempted to qualify.
