After recovering from a beginning spin to victory the Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has made significant progress in the Formula One World Championship for the first time in 2022.

The Red Bull driver, who saw his car skid across the gravel at one point, had to work much harder for his 24th professional victory, but was boosted by a power unit issue for his title challenger, Charles Leclerc.

When Leclerc developed difficulty midway through the Grand Prix, he had built himself a comfortable lead. Ferrari had no choice but to withdraw his car.

Sergio Perez finished second after being requested to step aside so that colleague Max Verstappen could take the chequered flag first.

George Russell finished third ahead of Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton, who demonstrated Mercedes’ development with an incredible comeback performance following a first-lap collision.
