Even after Sunday’s race in New Hampshire, the accident seemed to come out of nowhere, and the reason why it occurred is still largely a mystery.
Kyle Busch spun twice on Lap 163 of 301 in the race on Sunday, bringing out a yellow.
Austin Dillon suddenly approached Brad Keselowski underneath the caution and collided with his No. 6 Ford.
Once Keselowki had recovered, refuelled, and returned the favour to Dillon, the two briefly engaged in car-on-car combat before calmer heads eventually won out. Both racers’ respective vehicles sustained damage.
Dillon finished the race in 23rd place, one lap back, while Keselowski rallied to place seventh.
Nobody seemed to remember exactly what caused the event, despite attempts by NBC TV pit reporters to speak with the drivers’ teams.
Keselowski responded, ““Hot in the cars and we all let our tempers get the best of us. We had a decent day here. The Kohler Generators Ford Mustang climbed really far that last run,” when questioned about it after the race.
“I think we went from somewhere around the late teens and 20’s up to seventh on that last run. I am proud of our team for the effort today. It was certainly an up and down day today and it was good to finish on an up note.”
Keselowski promised to speak with Dillon privately about the matter. “I don’t need to be a jerk over the media,” he said.
They do share some history, as Keselowski caused Dillon’s severe collision during the race at Michigan International Speedway the year before.
When questioned about what happened while exercising caution, Dillon responded, “You guys saw it, right? It’s just hard racing, I guess. We’ve gone at it a couple of times the last two years; one time, I hit really hard.
“I just don’t like the way certain people race me, and it’s probably not the right way to do it under caution.”
Dillon believes that a conversation with Keselowski is unlikely to happen.
“I don’t talk to him,” he said.
