The failure of the negotiations between Red Bull and Porsche for a cooperation has been explained by Christian Horner.

The discussions between Red Bull and Porsche and the reasons why an agreement couldn’t be reached have been discussed by Christian Horner.

Red Bull was closely associated for a significant portion of the season with a partnership with Porsche, where technical know-how would be contributed to Red Bull Powertrains.

Nevertheless, it was reported that the negotiations had terminated early this month.

Red Bull Team Principal Horner remarked about the breakdown in negotiations by saying that the team felt the contract would have harmed their “independence.”

“In the end, it was not a good deal,” Horner said.

“Nothing was signed and there was no agreement. I’m not going to go into the details of what was said in the talks, but one of the strongest points of our team has always been independence.”

“I think Porsche is a great company and a great brand. Of course then it was a good plan to engage in conversation and explore the possibilities with them. But in the end it was not a good part from a strategic point of view.”

Horner: Less bureaucracy results from independence

If a deal had been forced through, Horner continued, the less responsive nature of manufacturers may have negatively affetced Red Bull.

“Big organisations have significant planning and I think that meant they were ahead of the game,” Horner continued.

“But as I said before: there was never a binding thing. Nothing has been signed by both parties.”

“One of our core values is independence and being able to make decisions quickly. With this, we have less bureaucracy.

“We are also a race team, fundamentally, so we make quick and effective decisions. As a race team, you react very quickly to everything.

“Manufacturers are a bit less autonomous in their decision-making. That’s an important thing: we want to protect what we have. How we operate, that has proved successful.”
