Helmut Marko believes Ferrari has an edge over Red Bull in terms of speed, but only during qualifying.
Despite not being shocked by Ferrari’s one-lap result in Azerbaijan, Helmut Marko was cautious heading into the Grand Prix.
On the Baku streets, Ferrari surprisingly won the pole position, becoming their first of the season. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez of Red Bull lined up second and third.
Ferrari suffered their worst season-opening performance in a long time and this was a sharp turnaround from their understated beginning of the year.
Helmut Marko, the Motorsport Advisor for Red Bull, wasn’t taken aback by Ferrari’s one-lap speed but anticipated that Red Bull’s race speed will win on Sunday.
According to Marko, “the Ferrari engine is the strongest engine and they can compete at the front with full power over one lap.”
“I hope they can’t do that in the race,” he added.
Marko expects Alonso’s comeback
Aston Martin racer Fernando Alonso is in danger of breaking his record of podium finishes because he can’t catch Ferrari or Red Bull.
The Austrian, who didn’t have much faith for Mercedes, does anticipate that the two-time World Champion will be closer on Saturday’s Sprint day.
“I think Alonso will be closer, he simply had some problems today,” continued Marko.
“The gap to the rest is big, Mercedes is already nine tenths [behind].”
