di Resta: Something at Ferrari persuaded Hamilton

Former Formula One racer Paul de Resta claims Lewis Hamilton found something at Ferrari that would prompt his spectacular move to Maranello in 2025.

The announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s multi-year contract, which began the 2024 “silly season,” shocked the Formula One community. Hamilton will join Ferrari in 2025. With many already considering it as the biggest driver change in the sport’s history, this is a major driver transfer.

Carlos Sainz, who now has less than a year to find a spot on the grid for the following year, will be replaced by the seven-time world champion. Hamilton will so be partnered with Charles Leclerc, who in January agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

As a result, the 103-time race winner’s 12th and last season with Mercedes in 2024 will mark the end of their 13-year partnership.

When the Stevenage-born racer switched from McLaren to Mercedes at the end of 2012, Hamilton made a further significant move before the hybrid era officially began in 2014. While history records that it was a brilliant choice, many saw it as a strange choice.

Hamilton is undoubtedly taking a significant risk by leaving a team that he is so comfortable with and has been so successful with, even though he will be rejoining a familiar face at Ferrari.

Hamilton provided “security”

“I guess I could have probably expected that at some point where Lewis is,” di Resta told sport.de.

“But at the same time for somebody who’s been in Formula 1 and so successful, has driven a Formula 1 car powered by a Mercedes engine for every lap and every bit of success he’s had, to change that at this point of your career I think is a big thing.

“However, I think Fred Vasseur is obviously a born racer. I raced with Fred like Lewis did years ago, you know how he comes into it.

“Is he the right man? Time will tell. Do they need a stronger personality? That’s what we’ll be looking back at in 10 years time and saying, ‘Well, was that the right thing?’

“But Lewis has obviously been convinced, he’s obviously been given security, he’s obviously been given something that’s driven him.

“I think it’s great news for motorsport. I think is great news for Formula 1 what’s happened to see him go in there and I guess it would be another step up if he goes and wins another title at Ferrari.

“That would rubber stamp already what has been an incredible career, but it’s a big task.”
