A possible alternative for the Russian GP has emerged

Singapore might fill the void left by F1’s breakup with Russia this season by hosting an extra Grand Prix.

Formula One may hold a double-header at Singapore’s Marina Bay Race Track in order to complete the scheduled 23-race season in 2022.

According to a top F1 insider, squad executives extensively examined the notion as the sport looks for a substitute for the cancelled Russian Grand Prix.

On September 25, the 17th round of the season was scheduled to take place at the Sochi Autodrom, beginning off a late run of flyaway events.

Nevertheless, in the aftermath of Russia’s significant military invasion on neighbouring Ukraine, the race was postponed, and ultimately cancelled outright.

Singapore has been proposed as a possible alternative

Apparently, Russia was slated as part of a three-game series alongside Singapore and Japan.

Singapore, on the other hand, may now jump in to stage a race on both September 25 and October 2, before the F1 camp moves on to Suzuka.

The first weekend’s race is expected to begin in the mid-afternoon, with the second weekend’s race starting at 20:00.

Given that the circuit is being built ahead of schedule and that the harbour position is advantageous, there will be minimal further inconvenience for the city-state.

What about Qatar, which has been mentioned before?

Despite reports that Singapore will double up, Qatar is still on F1’s radar, according to sources.

Qatar’s wealth fund, QIA, owns a 17% stake in Volkswagen Group, which has been eyeing a move into motorsport for some time.

Following the last round of talks, the Volkswagen Group has decided not to guarantee their Audi and Porsche brands, so an additional race in Qatar could be a useful negotiating point for Formula One.

After hosting its first-ever Grand Prix previous season, Qatar has been connected with the 25 September opening for some time, ahead of signing a new 10-year pact in 2023.

However, the primary worry about holding a race in Qatar at that time of year is the high heat, which can reach 40 degrees Celsius, which is why other options are being considered.
