After his previous surgery and included hospital stay, Alex Albon claims he and the Williams squad are “mindful” of the pressures the Singapore GP circuit will have on him.
Prior to his comeback to the Formula One grid in Singapore, Alex Albon acknowledges that he and the squad have “realistic” objectives.
Prior to seeing the Italian GP, he had an appendectomy; however, it was later discovered that “problems” from the operation caused “respiratory failure,” prolonging his stay in the hospital.
Albon, who skipped the Italian Grand Prix and was replaced by Nyck de Vries, will surprisingly make a comeback to Formula 1 in Singapore, where he will be racing the Williams FW44.
The London-born Thai recently participated in a karting event and claims he is “as fit as I can be” to compete in the Singapore GP, but he is wary of setting himself up for unrealistic expectations because the race is one of the hardest on the schedule.
“I feel ready, I feel as fit as I can be” Albon told media.
“We had a good week of training to get back to where we are today.
“Obviously, we were realistic, and we know that we’re coming to the most difficult race of the year. So we do have to be mindful of that.”
Albon commented on the experience of watching the Italian race from the sidelines after the Italian had produced fast times in practise on Friday before being forced to cancel the weekend on Saturday.
“It was frustrating to watch,” he explained. “The heart rate went up a little bit [while] they were keeping an eye on me. They told me I had to switch it off [the race] at some point!”
“It’s only because we had such a good car on Friday, when I woke up on Saturday and that was kind of that decision [being made] it was always ‘should you risk it or not’ in terms of driving, but we did the right thing.”
Appreciation for replacement of De Vries
De Vries, who filled in for Albon on short notice, turned in a strong performance that has other clubs taking notice.
Since the team knew they could finish in the points at Monza, he commended the Dutchman’s performance.
“Nyck did a really good job,” said Albon.
“I think we knew Monza was going to be a good one, but he he brought home some points which in the bigger scheme of things is very good for the team.”
Albon’s response to Singapore’s competitiveness was, “We’ll give it a go”
Williams’ previous performance at Monza and Spa Francorchamps, both of which have minimal downforce, makes it likely that Williams will suffer harder in Singapore, which has a significantly higher downforce.
Albon, though, remains optimistic about the team’s chances in Singapore.
“I think we’ve surprised ourselves a little bit this year with some circuits,” added Albon.
“This circuit is a little bit more down towards you know, let’s say downforce, and there’s a few [more] corners here.
“So not quite like Monza, but we’ll give it a go.”
