Fernando Alonso thinks a DRS mistake costs him important tenths during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying session.
Fernando Alonso thinks a DRS problem lost him extremely important “tenths” in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying.
His fastest time, which was 1.050 seconds slower than Charles Leclerc’s best, barely qualified him for sixth place on the grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday.
Lewis Hamilton qualified in fifth place and just about made it into qualifying round three, while teammate George Russell was eliminated in the second round, leading Alonso to think that the Aston Martin had more speed to its advantage.
He informed the media, “We had some DRS issues in FP1 and also in qualifying, which cost us a few tenths.
“Nevertheless it’s only Friday, it’s a long weekend ahead of us. Another qualifying tomorrow, another race, another race on Sunday. So plenty of opportunities to pick up a few places.”
The fact that Lance Stroll was unable to use his DRS on the start/finish straight further implied that both Aston Martins were experiencing issues.
Alonso and Verstappen were closely matched for the most of the lap, but an analysis of the data reveals that Alonso lost valuable time in the DRS zones to Verstappen.
Aston Martin makes an effort to be more consistent than Ferrari
Given that Ferrari succeeded in qualifying on the front row in Saudi Arabia before receiving a grid penalty, Alonso claims it is not shocking to see Leclerc earn the pole position.
He continued, “I think in Jeddah they were also in the first row, but Charles had to take the penalty after the Bahrain Power Unit penalty
“They’ve been unlucky; with a penalty of Carlos as well, the DNF of Charles in Australia. So I think they are fast and they showed it today, but we’ll try to be more consistent than them.”
