Following his final race as F1 race director at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, Michael Masi has made a comeback in the world of racing with a position in Australia.
With his appointment as the new independent chair of the Supercars Commission in his native Australia, Michael Masi has made a comeback to the world of racing in his first position since leaving the FIA.
Masi, a senior F1 race director, lost his job in February after an extensive internal probe into the contentious circumstances surrounding the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Drivers’ Championship after making a last-lap overtake on Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, thanks in large part to Masi’s management of the Safety Car in the closing circuits of that race.
In response to changes in the leadership of the sport’s race governance, it was reported in February that Masi would be offered a new post inside the FIA. However, a statement issued in July stated that Masi had departed the governing organisation to move to Australia.
Masi has already raced in Supercars
Neil Crompton, who earlier this month finished his ten-year appointment to the Commission, will be replaced in the Supercars position by Masi.
Masi’s current position is not his first in the field; the Australian previously worked as a Supercars administrator.
Before entering the FIA in 2018 as Charlie Whiting’s assistant, Masi served as the deputy race director for Motorsport Australia.
After Whiting unexpectedly passed away on the eve of the 2019 Australian Grand Prix, he later took over as Race Director.
