Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes has won pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix after winning the Sprint Qualifying event.
Valtteri Bottas has won the Interlagos Sprint Qualifying race, securing pole position for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Sunday.
Bottas chose the more aggressive Soft tyre compound for the 24-lap race after being given free tyre option. The Soft tyre’s immediate grip allowed him to blast past Max Verstappen into the opening corner, proving to be a wise move.
The Softs were so strong at the start of the race that Carlos Sainz, who had started fifth, overtaken into third at the first corner before passing Verstappen down the straight into Turn 3.
Verstappen passed Sainz for second position on Lap 5 and set about catching Bottas after the Medium tyres came to life after a few laps. While he was able to draw to inside DRS range of Bottas, the Finn was able to hold off the pressure to cross the line first and secure pole for the race on Sunday.
Verstappen finished second, with Sainz a distant third after battling Sergio Perez.
As a result, Bottas and Mercedes are awarded three points for their respective titles, Verstappen and Red Bull are awarded two points, extending the Dutch driver’s lead over Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship, and Sainz and Ferrari are awarded a single point for third place.
Following his exclusion from qualifying, Hamilton put in a fantastic drive from the back of the grid. He started 20th and sliced his way through the field with aggressive passes on the Ferraris and McLarens, including a particularly spectacular pass on Lando Norris, using the Medium tyres.
Following his engine change penalty, Hamilton finished sixth in the race, putting him in 10th place on the grid for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Norris will start fifth for McLaren, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon will start eighth, while Sebastian Vettel of Aston Martin will start ninth.
