After months of rumours, the planned collaboration between Red Bull and Porsche was eventually cancelled.
The intended Formula 1 collaboration was terminated, according to Gunther Steiner, in large part due to the “alpha-male” philosophies at Porsche and Red Bull, respectively.
Porsche was highly predicted to join and team up with Red Bull after sister Volkswagen brand Audi announced their plans to compete in Formula One in 2026 due to the new engine regulations.
The deal was canceled, despite the groundwork having been done, due to a “difference in DNA,” in the words of Red Bull CEO Christian Horner, with Porsche dissatisfied with the proposed structure of a 50-50 deal.
Red Bull Powertrains will continue to be a maker of power units in its own right for Red Bull, but Haas CEO Steiner thinks the deal was always going to fall through.
Alpha-males at Red Bull and Porsche
“My personal opinion is that two alpha-males collided here and that’s tricky,” Steiner told LAOLA1 .
“With a 50/50 split, one has to be in charge. There would have been an impasse, which would have caused problems. It is not yet certain that Porsche will not enter Formula 1 after all.
“But you have to come with a new idea.”
Porsche didn’t respond right away when asked if it was still committed to competing in Formula 1, even though the deadline for new entries for the updated 2026 rules was October 15.
