Red Bull appears to be strolling to both championships in 2022, leading to speculation that the team, which is supported by drinks, will be set for a prolonged period of domination at the top of Formula 1. However, Damon Hill does not believe that this portends that Red Bull is ready to repeat Mercedes’ prolonged streak of championship victories from 2014 onward.
Red Bull is expected to win the championship in 2022, but 1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill is doubtful that this will mark the beginning of the team’s long era of dominance.
Max Verstappen has won the previous five races for Red Bull, which has won 13 of the 16 races so far in 2022. If things go his way at the forthcoming Singapore Grand Prix, Verstappen might clinch the Drivers’ Championship.
Recent race victories by Red Bull are reminiscent of the beginning of the turbo-hybrid era in F1 in 2014, when Mercedes won all but one of the titles up for grabs until 2021.
Hill, on the other hand, expressed concern that Red Bull would be able to repeat that level of dominance, claiming that other competitors would have learned from Red Bull’s achievements this year.
Will other squads challenge Red Bull’s dominance?
“That’s the sort of question I asked [Red Bull Team Principal] Christian [Horner] actually, in Monza,” Hill told the F1 Nation podcast.
“When they changed the regulations to the hybrid [in 2014], Mercedes dominated for the whole of the era, effectively only losing in the final season of those regulations, and then with the new regulations, Red Bull have come in on the right foot.
“Is this going to be their period of dominance? I’m not so sure, because it’s quite close.
“Mercedes have come out with a concept, they might review that, but they’re all going to be able to look at what Red Bull are doing this year and respond. I think Ferrari might do the same.
“I don’t know whether it’s going to be so easy to dominate, but definitely [Red Bull] have started on the right foot.”
