After colliding during qualifying at Pocono Raceway, Kurt Busch will miss a third straight NASCAR Cup Series race due to concussion-like symptoms.
Busch has been given a waiver, keeping him in the playoffs, but NASCAR’s medical staff has not yet given the driver the all-clear to race.
Although he has dropped to 18th in the rankings, he will still be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs as long as he stays in the top-30 and only two new champions emerge during the next four races.
This weekend, Ty Gibbs will once again operate the No. 45 Toyota. At Pocono, the 19-year-old made his Cup debut and placed an outstanding 16th. At the IMS Road Course, he continued his strong performance by placing 17th.
In addition to competing in the Cup race at Michigan, Gibbs will also be driving the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Supra in the Xfinity Series on a full-time basis.
This week, 44-year-old Busch issued the following statement:
“While I am continuing to make improvements every day and can’t wait to get back in the No. 45 Monster Energy Toyota Camry TRD, I have yet to be cleared to return to competition and will not be participating in the NASCAR Cup Series race this weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
“I know Ty will continue to do a great job representing 23XI and the No. 45 Monster Energy team in Michigan. I am working hard to get back to 100% and it’s my hope to be back in the car at Richmond Raceway. Thanks to everyone for the continued support and I look forward to being back on track soon.”
