Max Verstappen has spoken out in response to Lewis Hamilton’s contract renewal.
Lewis Hamilton’s renewed contract at Mercedes, according to Max Verstappen, is “positive” for Formula 1. The seven-time champion will continue to compete.
On Thursday, August 31, Mercedes revealed that Hamilton would remain with the team for the 2024 and 2025 seasons and that George Russell had also agreed to new agreements, putting a conclusion to months of rumors.
Verstappen, who defeated Hamilton for the championship in the 2021 season, thinks Hamilton’s decision to continue in Formula One is only good for the sport of racing.
Verstappen’s reaction to Hamilton
Verstappen told reporters, including RacingNews365, that the news was “absolutely good for the motorsport.”
“And at the end of the day, it’s good for himself and Mercedes because they’ve been already teamed up for a long time and for them to continue that partnership is great.
“With the battles, we just have to wait and see what happens between the teams and how everyone is going to perform next year.”
Verstappen said he would stop competing when his Red Bull deal expires at the end of 2028, when he will be 31 years old, while Hamilton’s contract extension ensures he will compete in Formula One until he is at least 40.
The Dutchman is an avid supporter of endurance motorsport and believes that, given the chance, he would not combine continuing in Grand Prix competition with a World Endurance Championship program.
“I don’t think I would want to do that,” he said.
“Because I want to focus on one thing fully, and when you start combining stuff, you can only do one race and so you are not really well prepared.”
