The NASCAR Truck race at Kansas Speedway on Friday night was won by John Hunter Nemechek, who overtook Carson Hocevar on the penultimate lap to progress to the playoffs in the second round.
Hocevar, who had had trouble during most of the race, made his last pit stop on Lap 80 of 134 and attempted to hold on to the finish line in order to win, which would have been his sole chance to advance in the playoffs.
It almost succeeded.
With 14 circuits left, Nemechek, the first vehicle to receive fresh tyres, surged into second place and was eight seconds behind.
Hocevar’s No. 42 Chevrolet ran out of fuel, but he was capable of coasting back to place second as Nemechek easily passed him to retake the lead on the closing laps.
For Nemechek, it marks his second victory of the year and 13th overall.
“It’s huge. I just want to thank you to everyone at Kyle Busch Motorsports. I can’t thank them enough for the truck they gave me tonight, it was absolutely unreal,” Nemechek said. “We started on the pole, won both stages, led a ton of laps and won the race.
“We came in really good points-race but we were able to get some more playoff points and it puts us in a good spot. We have some momentum on our side heading into Bristol.
“I think this one is really sweeter. It’s been a really tough week for myself emotionally with things you can’t control. It feels good to come out here and cap it off with a win.”
Hocevar and Matt Crafton were the first two out after the first round of the playoffs, finishing ninth and tenth in the rankings.
Third place went to Ryan Preece, fourth place went to Zane Smith, and Grant Enfinger completed out the top five.
Nemechek, Zane Smith, Chandler Smith, Ty Majeski, Ben Rhodes, Christian Eckes, Stewart Friesen, and Enfinger will move on to the next round of the Truck Series playoffs.
