Perez praised Verstappen’s outstanding qualities

Despite being 3rd in the 2022 World Championship rankings, Mexican driver Sergio Perez remains confident that he can win a championship throughout his F1 profession.

Sergio Perez is certain that he can defeat teammate Max Verstappen to win the Formula One World Championship.

Perez is presently third in the rankings with the 2022 season already halfway through, 85 points behind Verstappen at the top. The Mexican’s chances of winning a title haven’t been diminished by this, though.

When questioned if he might win the title, Perez responded as follows to the German daily Sport Bild: “Definitely! I can defeat anyone in Formula 1 if everything is right and I drive perfectly.”

Consistency is crucial for Perez in his fight with Verstappen

Perez names Verstappen as one of the racers he believes he can defeat, though he adds that the Dutchman is so good that Perez must exceed him consistently.

“Max too. I’ve already shown that several times this season,” Perez said.

“But unfortunately it won’t be a foregone conclusion. Max has incredible quality, is extremely mature for his age and has a very good feeling for the car.

“That’s why the question is not whether I can beat him on a weekend, but how many races I can finish ahead of him. It’s about consistency. That’s what makes a champion.”

Perez considers his depth of sporting experience to be a significant asset in this regard.

“I’ve experienced just about everything in Formula 1,” the three-time race winner explained.

“Then there’s the hard work with the team and the energy I put into strength training, among other things. I’m in top shape.

“I draw a lot of self-confidence from these things. That’s why I have no doubt that I can become champion.”

Red Bull is the “best team in the world” 

Red Bull has a commanding 97-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, and Perez thinks he is in a strong position to challenge for the title.

“I’m with the best team in the world,” Perez commented.

“The amount of knowledge and talent that comes together here is unbelievable. With Max, I have an absolute world-class driver as my teammate. We get on well and work together to make Red Bull a success.

“But of course we are also competitors. Everyone wants to be the best. We always push each other to the next level. To compete against Max is a big challenge.”
