Red Bull reveals that Perez’s form has been affected by car development

Although the Mexican had a great beginning for the season, he has had trouble keeping up with Max Verstappen in current races.

Red Bull has confessed that Sergio Perez’s performance has been limited in comparison to Max Verstappen by the development of its Formula 1 car for 2022.

Verstappen struggled in the new ground effect car, and Perez had a solid start to the season with the RB18, taking his first pole in Saudi Arabia and winning in Monaco.

Verstappen, who prefers a car to be powerful on the nose and can tolerate oversteer, has now struck a hot streak, dominating the last five races from France to Italy, and is in contention for a second world championship.

In comparison to Verstappen’s 210 points since victory in Monaco, Perez, who has been racing a slightly different floor than his teammate, has failed to keep up.

Red Bull has publicly revealed that its development plan for 2022 has negatively impacted Perez’s effectiveness.

Development of RB18 negatively affected Perez

Red Bull technician Pierre Wache discussed the RB18’s development route and its impact on Perez in an interview prior to the Italian Grand Prix, which Verstappen won and Perez finished sixth.

“I think there are multiple factors but the main one is clearly the car balance and confidence with it compared to the beginning of the year,” Wache explained to media including RacingNews65.com.

“When the car was a little bit more balanced for [Perez] and a little bit less for Max, after the potential of development we put on the car during the season, [it] moving away from that is maybe part of it.

“Having to find the right setup for him is quite difficult to put him as confident as he could be to beat or to fight with Max.”

Perez also making compromises

Wache also disclosed that Perez had to compromise ultimate performance in order to maintain car balance.

“When you try to develop the car, theoretically for the performance, and after you’re stuck in terms of setup to rebalance the car, then it means that you will have to go down a little bit on performance to achieve the desired car balance.

“I would say normally, you will lose it a bit of performance to make better, it doesn’t mean it is a lot.”
