Christian Horner has praised Max Verstappen for his effort after the Dutch racer came from 10th on the starting grid to clinch the Hungarian Grand Prix and claim the Drivers’ Championship lead by 80 points.
Christian Horner, the head of the Red Bull Racing, praised Max Verstappen’s efforts after the Dutch driver won the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Due to a power unit malfunction on Saturday, Verstappen could only start the race on Sunday from 10th on the grid. However, with the help of some astute strategic planning from Red Bull, the Dutchman was able to cut through the pack and seize the lead on Lap 51 of 70.
Horner praised Verstappen’s achievement after the race despite an early clutch problem and a spin on lap 41 that cost him a spot.
“Max was fantastic today,” Horner told Viaplay.
“We had a little bit of an issue early on, the clutch wasn’t behaving quite as expected.
“But then it seemed to clear and then we could release him to really attack the cars ahead, and he was on fire, even with his spin.”
Horner praises the “amazing” race before summer vacation
Until Lap 45, Verstappen was still behind Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc, who was having trouble on the Hard compound tyres. Then Verstappen easily passed the championship contender.
“[Max] was able to make use of the Medium tyre against Charles on the Hard, and then it was really was game on, and the car had great pace today,” said Horner.
“It’s been an incredible race, great to get those points, and Max was absolutely supreme today.
“It’s the best way to sign off. Two wins in two weeks is the perfect way to go into the into the summer break.”
Horner stated that even though the following Grand Prix isn’t until August 28, he was planning to have four-week break between events. However, he emphasised that because F1 squads are required to shut down their factories, the shutdowns won’t start until August 5 and that there is still work to be done up until then.
“I think the whole team has deserved a very well-earned break, but that happens on Friday, so we’ve still got a week to do as much as we can before the shutdown,” he added.
