Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have conflicting feelings about the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which Verstappen recalls well from the 2021 race…
Even though Max Verstappen won the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the events of 2021 are bound to stay on in people’s minds for some time.
The Red Bull racer appeared to be on track to win the Baku race during a season that is remembered for the tight title duel involving Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen was forced to retire from the race, though, just five laps from the finish line when the left rear tire on his car broke. Hamilton was expected to replace Sergio Perez at the top of the Drivers’ rankings as Perez took the lead in the race.
All of that changed when the race began again for the two-lap dash to the line. Hamilton made an error, causing the Mercedes to go straight into Turn 1.
Verstappen thoroughly remembers the emotion when the seven-time World Champion was suddenly eliminated from contention.
‘A hundred messages’ after Hamilton’s mistake
Verstappen stated on Red Bull’s Talking Bull podcast in 2022, “I hear the restart [happening].”
“At one point I hear the guys brake and I could hear [a screeching noise], and then everyone’s [cheering] like, ‘Yeah!’
“I think Gemma [Lusty, Red Bull press officer] was with me, and the phone was like [buzzing], like a hundred messages! I said, ‘What happened? What happened?’
“And then you [Perez] were back in the lead again.”
Hamilton placed 15th, while Perez went on to claim his first victory for Red Bull in the race.
