Pirelli’s Motorsport Director, Mario Isola, was rather taken aback by Max Verstappen’s winning run, which included a spin along the way.
The racer whose achievement most astonished Mario Isola during the Hungarian Grand Prix was Max Verstappen, according to the director of Pirelli Motorsport.
Due to mechanical difficulties that plagued him during qualifying on Saturday, Verstappen began the race from 10th place and acknowledged that it might be difficult to finish on the podium.
The Dutchman was managed to surge through the pack and overtake Charles Leclerc, his title challenger, but he had to make the move again after spinning out at the end of Turn 13. Leclerc had briefly passed the Dutchman back in second place.
Verstappen secured his eighth win of the campaign, increasing his advantage at the top of the World Championship rankings to 80 points, while Ferrari had a tough day due to issues with pit stops and tyre selection.
Verstappen’s achievement left Isola amazed
Verstappen’s effort to triumph at the Hungaroring impressed Isola.
“I will say Verstappen [surprised me the most],” Isola told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“Because of the pace, not the strategy, because [it was] the strategy that was indicated by us, so it was confirmed that it was a good strategy.
“[I say Verstappen] in terms of strength in the performance, that he was able to win the race after spinning and starting from 10th position.
“It doesn’t happen every day.”
Verstappen’s spin did not affect his prospects in any way
Isola clarified why this was not the case when questioned if he would have anticipated that Verstappen’s tyres would have sustained more damage as a result of his spin.
“The spin was quite quick,” he commented.
“So I believe that [the] tyres were still in a sort of rotation, [rather than creating] a proper flat spot.
“He was not complaining about vibrations on the radio, so it means that the tyres were [holding up] quite well.”
