Why Alonso was ‘speechless’ following the Australian GP?

Fernando Alonso lost time in Australia owing to the scheduling of a Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car, crossing the finish outside the points and a lap down.

Given his strong speed in both Saudi Arabia and Australia, Fernando Alonso believes it’s “tough to explain” why he hasn’t scored points in the last two races.

Alonso started the 2022 season with a couple of points in Bahrain and was on track to add to his total at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit before an engine failure forced him to retire early.

He rebounded at the revised Albert Park to threaten an upset in qualifying, only for more mechanical troubles to hit and drive him helplessly into the barriers in Q3.

Alonso “speechless” as losing points once again

Alonso was on track for a big points haul in Sunday’s race after making significant progress from 10th on the grid with the Hard tyres, only for his afternoon to be wrecked by the timing of a Safety Car and Virtual Safety Car.

“I think we’ve been extremely unlucky with the Safety Car,” lamented Alonso, having fallen down the order to 17th.

“We were looking for P6 or P7, which was a great comeback, and with the Safety Car everyone regroups, and our race was gone.

“[Under] the Virtual Safety Car, we pitted just to change tyres and obviously it was too early to finish the race on the yellows (Medium tyres), and we gambled on that. [But] I think the killer was the first Safety Car.

“I’m speechless, because I think we did a mega weekend in Saudi, and here especially, and we have zero points in the two races, which is difficult to explain.”
