Perez wants Red Bull to address ‘troubling’ reliability concerns

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez suffered his second DNF of the 2022 season, this time due to a technical problem. His recent withdrawal “hurts,” according to the Mexican.

Following a “unfortunate” withdrawal from the Canadian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez has encouraged Red Bull to remain at the top of any reliability problems.

The Mexican had raced from P13 after an accident in Saturday’s qualifying session, but was gaining up ground when he was required to halt the car only eight laps in.

Perez said the issue was with the gearbox, and he was unhappy after thinking he was making progress in the race.

“[It’s a] big shame,” Perez told media, including RacingNews365.com. “It’s hard to digest a zero on a Sunday.

“[The pace] was good. We were coming through it, saving the tyres, the brakes especially, so we had plenty of potential in my race to come back.”

Perez: We need to stay on top of things

When questioned if he believes the problem is linked to his qualifying accident, Perez said that he does not feel this is the case.

He does, however, would like the squad to be aware of any potential reliability issues.

“We need to keep on top of these things,” Perez explained.

“The gearbox was at the end of its life, so we just have to keep on top of these things, because [with] reliability, it’s very painful, and having a zero for the championship, it’s also very painful.”

“We have a new set of regulations, and everyone [is] pushing incredibly hard with everything,” Perez said when asked why teams across the grid are facing dependability concerns.

Being in championship battle makes DNF “hurt”

Perez is presently second in the World Championship standings, having won the Monaco Grand Prix in May for the third time in his career.

As a result of his DNF in Canada, teammate Max Verstappen has stretched his advantage at the top of the rankings to 46 points, making Perez’s DNF all the more painful.

“I know that a zero, when you’re fighting for the championship, is very costly,” he said.

“But it’s still a very long championship. Today hurts a lot, so I want to forget about today and move on to Silverstone.”
