Mercedes compliments Russell’s progress in 2022

George Russell continues to lead Lewis Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship as his first full season with Mercedes draws to a close, and the Technical Director has complimented the King’s Lynn native’s contribution in 2022.

Mike Elliot, the technical director at Mercedes, has praised George Russell for the influence he has had throughout his first full season with the Silver Arrows.

Russell, a part of Mercedes’ junior driver programme since 2017, made his Formula One race start in 2019 with the Mercedes-powered Williams squad, and his performances in modest machinery won him praise from many in the paddock.

As Lewis Hamilton’s replacement for the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, the Briton had a great opportunity to make an impression at the front. He even appeared to be on his way to a fairy-tale debut victory but a botched pit stop and a flat tyre derailed him.

Russell was expected to gradually join Mercedes full-time in order to succeed Valtteri Bottas, and he definitely did so for 2022.

Nevertheless, as the once-dominant Mercedes squad has slipped behind Red Bull and Ferrari in the pecking order this year, with the W13 particularly struggling with bouncing troubles earlier in the season, expectations of winning races and making a title challenge have had to be recalibrated.

Russell performs admirably versus Hamilton

Elliot praised Russell’s ability to contribute and self improvement during his first season with the Silver Arrows regardless of the fact that Russell has yet to come out on top a Grand Prix. Russell has progressed to impress, scoring frequent podium finishes to sit 4th in the Drivers’ rankings with 207 points – 27 points and two places ahead of seven-time World Champion teammate Hamilton.

“You expect racing drivers to be pushy; they have a limited career and they want to win,” Elliot told media.

“I wouldn’t describe George as over-pushy, I think he’s working really hard with the team. I think what’s been really nice is to see him grow.

“You sit down next to a seven-time World Champion at the table, and bringing your contribution has got to be tough at the beginning.

“But I think George has had a big part to play in the team, and I think he’s doing a really good job.”
