According to Laurent Rossi, Alpine is looking for solutions that will work for both Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri, who both want to be on the F1 grid the next season.
The crew at Alpine, according to CEO Laurent Rossi, is aiming to keep Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso on the F1 grid in 2019.
Alonso, who is 40 and the oldest racer recently competing in Formula One, has made a strong impression since making a comeback to the competition in 2021 with Alpine after a two-year absence, and he has voiced a preference to prolong his contract with the French team, which ends this year.
Oscar Piastri, the reserve racer for Alpine, is 21 years old and has not yet competed in an F1 race. Despite this, the Australian is highly regarded because he has won three consecutive junior category championships. Rossi stated he was determined to guarantee that both drivers will have a drive in 2023.
“[With] Fernando, his contract is over this year, so obviously we are discussing with him, we are building scenarios for him and Oscar,” Rossi told media.
“The idea is that the two of them are worthy drivers, and we would love them to drive next year.
“We are working on scenarios for both of them to drive and scenarios that are very plausible, very sensible, and that we imagine would satisfy both drivers.”
Piastri loan accepted by Alpine
Since Alonso’s teammate Esteban Ocon has a contract with Alpine that runs until 2024, Piastri would not be capable of driving for the French team should Alonso decide to extend it.
In order to race and acquire experience, Rossi said he would be pleased to lend Piastri to another squad, but he emphasised that Alpine wanted to keep the Australian’s services in the long run.
“I’d be open to loan Oscar out to a team as long as I get him back,” Rossi said of the 2021 Formula 2 Champion.
“We’ve invested heavily in Oscar, we believe in him and that’s why he’s our reserve driver. He’s a very promising talent. We would love to fulfil this talent in the team.
“So a loan, like many other drivers, starting in another team, to learn the tricks and then coming back to us, will be a good scenario.”
