Will Daniel Ricciardo, who is planned to depart McLaren’s F1 team by the end of 2022, be given a drive somewhere in the McLaren group or try to stay in F1 with a different team?
Daniel Ricciardo will need to start a different drive, but McLaren CEO Zak Brown claims the Australian driver is still committed to F1 through 2023.
After weeks of rumours concerning his future, Ricciardo’s departure from McLaren was officially announced on Wednesday.
According to a McLaren release, the sides had mutually decided to discontinue Ricciardo’s 2023 contract, which brought an early end to the Australian’s time with the Woking-based team.
Along with its F1 squad, McLaren fields squads in IndyCar and Extreme E. It also plans to compete in Formula E starting in the next 2022–2023 season.
Although Brown stated that McLaren would gladly consider giving Ricciardo a position with one of their other squads, the CEO also stated that he believed Ricciardo was intent on getting another F1 seat for the upcoming season.
“We are Daniel Ricciardo fans, and we do have other racing activities [in other series], and if that was something that was of interest to Daniel, we would welcome those conversations. But I believe he’s very focused on Formula 1 at the moment,” Brown told media including RacingNews365.com.
Unsatisfactory 2022 for Ricciardo
The Italian Grand Prix victory in a 1-2 finish with teammate Lando Norris was Ricciardo’s major accomplishment in 2021, the year he attended McLaren.
Nevertheless, the Australian has had a terrible year in 2022, scoring just 19 points compared to Norris’ 76, and his bad results led to rumours that he would soon be leaving McLaren.
Ricciardo’s best opportunity of a competitive streak would seem to rest with Alpine, who require a replacement for Fernando Alonso, and for whom Ricciardo raced in 2019 and 2020 under the team’s former guise of Renault. Many F1 teams have already announced their driving lineups for 2023.
