After the Hungarian Grand Prix, George Russell complimented on Lewis Hamilton’s effort in moving up to second place and expressed his “proudness” for the squad’s achievement.
In order to beat him out for 2nd spot in the Hungarian Grand Prix, George Russell acknowledged that Lewis Hamilton had a “fantastic” race.
Russell of Mercedes finished on the podium for the sixth time this season despite failing to turn his first F1 pole position into his first triumph.
Russell managed to overtake Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc during the second round of pit stops and was in second place at the time.
Russell was overtaken by Hamilton, a seven-time World Champion, in the closing laps of the race after the Briton, who had began the race from sixth, put forth a powerful comeback effort.
In his post-event remarks, Russell hailed the outstanding team performance and praised Hamilton on his race to the podium.
“Lewis did an amazing job, and obviously had far superior pace at the end because I think he had a very strong middle stint,” Russell told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“I think as a team, we’ve got a lot to be proud of. We did everything right, for both of us today, to give us as a team the best opportunity to fight for victory.
“Unfortunately it didn’t go our way today, but as a team we did everything right.”
Russell reflects on his desire for success
By keeping the lead early in the race while rain was expected, Russell gave himself the best chance of winning his first Formula One race.
The final championship winner Max Verstappen undercut the Brit, but the Brit could do nothing to stop it.
Considering his good beginning, was Russell thinking that a debut triumph would be in the cards?
“Yeah, definitely. It was always going to be tricky afternoon because there was rain in the air throughout, and usually if you’re in pole position it’s spitting, you’re pretty disappointed,” added Russell.
“But I was on the Soft tyre, so I was kind of rubbing my hands together and made a really good start.
“The first four laps were really strong, I think we got a three second gap to Carlos [Sainz], and then unfortunately, the rain sort of stopped.
“The Medium tyres came into their own, but we still had a good first stint, and we pitted early both occasions to try and cover Max, and cover the Ferraris.
“Ultimately, Max was too fast for us today.”
