Sergio Perez will captain a squad in the recently established electric E1 race boat championship in addition to competing in Formula One with Red Bull the following season.
It has been announced that Sergio Perez will form a squad to compete in the globe’s first all-electric race boat series under the name Team Mexico.
The first UIM E1 World Championship is set to start in 2023, and Perez’s new squad will occupy one of the twelve slots on the starting grid.
Alejandro Agag, a pioneer in electric mobility, is one of the co-founders of E1 and was instrumental in creating the electric Formula E and Extreme E (off-road) races.
In GP2 (now Formula 2), where Perez placed second in the 2010 season, Agag was also the previous team manager and owner of Barwa Addax.
Perez is eager for the E1 adventure
Perez announced the information and stated that he was excited to explore a brand-new type of competition using electric RaceBird boats.
“Given my relationship with Alejandro, I’ve kept a close eye on what he’s been doing and his various championships,” said the Red Bull F1 driver.
“I think what he’s achieved with promoting more sustainable forms of motorsport is commendable.
“Seeing a racing team flying the flag for Mexico on a global stage will be amazing and I cannot wait to watch the RaceBird in action for the first time.
“I’ve heard lots of positive stories about the boat and the exciting sporting product E1 is trying to create for fans with city events.
“For sure this will be a great challenge in my career and a learning experience.”
