Sammy Smith, a two-time ARCA East winner, will devote himself entirely to the NASCAR Xfinity Series starting in 2023.
The No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing will be driven by 18-year-old Smith in the upcoming season thanks to sponsorship from Pilot Flying J, TMC Transportation, and Allstate Peterbilt, among others. His team leader will be Jeff Meendering.
Smith raced for JGR in 9 Xfinity races this season, finishing in the top five once and in the top 10 three times. Third place at the Watkins Glen (New York) International was his best finish.
Additionally, he won the Sioux Chief Showdown title, given to the racer who excels in the 10 short racetrack and road course competitions on the ARCA schedule.
“Sammy is a fantastic addition to our 2023 Xfinity lineup. He proved to have the passion and the talent to necessary to compete for wins in the races he ran for us in 2022,” said Steve DeSouza, JGR’s executive vice president of Xfinity Series and driver development.
“We are excited to get him in the No. 18 full time and know he will be competitive from the jump.”
In 2022, the Toyota development driver established himself by winning the ARCA East title for the second year in a row. He recently won ARCA East and six ARCA Menards Series races.
“I can’t wait to get behind the wheel full-time and am looking forward to a great season. I learned a lot in 2022 that will really help me to be competitive and run up front in the Xfinity Series,” Smith said.
“I am excited for next year and appreciate the opportunity.”
