Vettel’s retirement makes Hamilton unhappy

Sebastian Vettel will leave Formula One at the completion of the 2022 race, and Lewis Hamilton has appreciated the German’s stance on a number of social and environmental concerns.

Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula One in a statement, and Lewis Hamilton praised the German for his support of social and environmental issues.

In latest years, Vettel has tried to leverage his standing as a four-time World Champion to draw attention to a number of off-track causes, such as LGBT rights, Canada’s tar sands mining, and the danger that rising sea levels pose to Miami.

Hamilton has also been an outspoken advocate for social justice, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and pushing for the arrest of the police officers responsible for the 2020 shooting of Breonna Taylor.

Hamilton respected Vettel’s decision to retire from Formula 1 at the completion of the 2022 season after Vettel made the announcement previous month. Vettel was Hamilton’s former rival and had competed against the Briton for the championship in 2017 and 2018.

Hamilton: I’m sad to see Vettel leaving

“I’m sad to see Seb’s leaving, but I’m really proud to have had a united front with him on certain things,” Hamilton said in conversation with Viaplay.

“Fighting on the track was great, but standing with him against certain beliefs and certain issues when we face different countries has been some of the proudest moments I’ve had in this sport.

“We’re all fighting something and I choose to be someone that’s uniting people rather than dividing people.

“I see so many people out there doing great things. I just want to be another out there that’s hopefully trying to do something positive.”
