Lewis Hamilton thinks a first Mercedes victory in 2022 is possible considering the improvements made prior to the summer break.
Following their encouraging achievements prior to the F1 summer break, Lewis Hamilton thinks Mercedes is on the verge of their first victory of the year.
Mercedes are commonly believed to have cut the gap to the 2022 closest challengers Red Bull and Ferrari despite a challenging beginning of the season.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell helped Mercedes to repeat double-podium finishes before the four-week summer break.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Russell won the team’s first pole position of the year, and Hamilton has finished on the podium in each of the previous five races.
A victory in 2022 for Hamilton will enable him keep his own record of winning in every F1 season since his debut in 2007.
Hamilton was questioned about if he thinks Mercedes would win this season prior to the Belgian Grand Prix.
“I do, definitely,” Hamilton said to media, including RacingNews365.com.
“I think we’ve been improving, we’ve had this consistency that’s come up in the recent races, and there’s great progress that the team is making, everyone pulling together and continuing to push.”
Hamilton: The W13 is now officially a “racing car”
The installation of a Technical Directive at the Belgian Grand Prix might also be advantageous for Mercedes.
Technical Directive 039 intends to fix a gap where significant floor flexing of the Red Bulls and Ferraris was allegedly seen.
Mercedes will be the first to benefit if constraining this design approach slows down the two leading teams.
Hamilton kept talking about the W13’s performance, claiming that Mercedes’ innovations had made the car feel more “normal.”
“The car is becoming more of a racing car, which is not particularly what it was the beginning of the year, more like a normal racing car in the sense of its characteristics, so that’s positive,” added Hamilton.
“The last race was obviously the best showing that we’ve had so far, and that for us was a huge boost just [showing] that we can close that gap.
“It’s naturally going to continue to be tough, but we will keep our heads down. The other guys are doing an amazing job, but I do believe that we can close the gap.”
