Lewis Hamilton gave a pessimistic assessment of the W13’s performance after Mercedes qualified for the Belgian Grand Prix as only the fourth-fastest team.

Lewis Hamilton claims that the poor performance of his Mercedes during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend affected him.

Hamilton and team member George Russell struggled with a lack of balance and excessive drag over the course of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, as evidenced by their performance in Saturday’s the last qualifying session, where they were outpaced only by Red Bulls, Ferraris, and Alpines, finishing seventh and eighth.

Hamilton qualified almost two seconds behind Verstappen’s pole position despite being the quicker of the two Mercedes by three tenths of a second. When his crew radioed to him to let him know, he seemed perplexed by the difference.

Russell placed fourth in the race on Sunday, but Hamilton’s day was over on lap one due to contact with Fernando Alonso.

The British driver said in a post-race interview that he was working hard to maintain his positive attitude despite his car’s seeming lack of competitiveness at Spa.

“I don’t want to use the word ‘disappointment’ because you have to remember that there are 2000 people back at the factory who are working so hard to get it right,” Hamilton told media.

“Of course, I wish that we got it right, and had upgrades to push us forward. I wish we were fighting at the front, but that isn’t the way it is.”

“It hurts, believe me, it hurts. But you’ve got to laugh it off and say ‘I’m not fighting for a championship’.

“I have a responsibility to keep morale high. We’ve got to keep pushing and not be discouraged. Yes, it sucks, and the car is slow.”

Mercedes will consult on the difficulties with the W13

Before this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton said numerous talks would be held to try to solve the W13’s inherent issues.

“What we will do is talk about meetings we’re going to have and talk about where we want to be with next year’s car, what the problem is, what we can take from our understanding of the data we have and apply it to make sure the next car is not like this one,” said the Briton.
