Sainz warns the FIA from the pit lane: “We’re about to have an accident”

If the size of the pit lanes at some circuits is not addressed, Carlos Sainz predicts that F1 will “have an accident.”

Carlos Sainz has requested a reassessment of the F1 pit lane size and claims that if the problem is not resolved, “there is going to be an incident.”

The Ferrari racer thinks that in order to avoid hurting a mechanic, the FIA and Formula 1 need to expand the tiniest pit lanes.

At the Dutch Grand Prix, Sainz felt severely penalised for a risky pit release after Fernando Alonso of Alpine was released into his path following a delayed 12.7s pit stop.

Sainz justified his actions, saying that he took more time to leave the pits since there was a McLaren mechanic in the pit bay beside him.

The situation was made worse when Red Bull’s Sergio Perez crashed into one of the Ferrari wheel guns while making a pit stop on the same lap, bringing attention to the cramped conditions in the pit lane.

Sainz: F1 & FIA, not the teams, must make improvements

The Spanish racer defended Ferrari’s pit stops in a statement prior to the Singapore Grand Prix and urged F1’s higher officials to take additional action to reduce the danger of harm during pit stops.

“For me, it’s not the pit crews or the F1 teams that really need to make changes, it’s the FIA and Formula One organization,” Sainz insisted to media.

“I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; one day there’s going to be an accident and one day there’s going to be a human involved, because of how tight everything is when there’s a safety car, and we’re all pitting at the same time.

“Like in Budapest one year ago when we pitted on the formation lap, in Zandvoort when the safety car came out it was chaos, and we need to find a solution because I feel like we are putting someone’s health at risk.”

Sainz considers changing pit lane homologation

There are many different pit lane sizes on the schedule as a result of a number of sites that hold F1 races.

For instance, the Monaco Grand Prix has a smaller pit lane than other locations due to its less developed historical infrastructure.

In order for an F1 track to be homologated and appear on the schedule, it must meet a number of requirements laid down by the FIA. According to Sainz, the safety issue may be resolved by requiring an increase in pit lane size.

“Circuits get homologated and if in order to get homologated we need a wider pit lane and a longer pit lane to have space in between cars we need to make sure that happens,” added Sainz.

“I know logistically and technically is not easy for these circuits, but I was in a pretty scary situation in Zandvoort, and it could happen anytime soon.

“It’s something that is a matter that we need to raise.”
