Charles Leclerc is not giving up just yet despite being 93 points behind Max Verstappen in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship.
Despite a distance between himself and Ferrari and Max Verstappen and Red Bull that is only becoming wider, Charles Leclerc believes they still have an opportunity to win the title this year.
Leclerc leads the Drivers’ Championship following the Australian Grand Prix with a 46-point lead over Verstappen after winning a couple of the first three races of the season.
Verstappen, who is currently leading the championship, is 93 points clear of the Monegasque and appears to be headed for his second World Championship. However, a mix of poor reliability, dubious strategy, and driving mistake has seen Leclerc’s lead fall.
Leclerc is refusing to give up despite his large disadvantage, and he is confident that Ferrari still has an opportunity to win this year.
“I think the base is there, and if we put everything together we still have a chance, and I will believe in it until the very end,” Leclerc told Sky F1.
“This is the mentality that we need to have as a team, and that we need to keep until the end of the year because we need to keep the motivation as high as possible, and I really do believe that we can still make it.”
Leclerc: We need to try to win every race
Leclerc declared that from this point on, his only strategy would be to pursue victory at every Grand Prix because he had such a huge lead over Verstappen and a limited amount of races left to try to narrow it.
“The goal now is to maximise our potential at every race, which means going for the win at every race, and at least have the pace to win, and then we’ll go race by race and try to improve as a team,” said Leclerc.
“[Verstappen] has had an incredible first part of the season, and Red Bull did such a great job in the first part of the year. Again, we focus on our job, I’m sure that we can do even better.”
