Ferrari performed well in Italy after recently appearing to struggle for race pace. Carlos Sainz thinks that this comeback shows a strength of the squad during a trying period.
In the middle of a “tough” second half of the season, Carlos Sainz believes Ferrari’s better race speed at the Italian Grand Prix showed one of the team’s advantage.
Red Bull has been gaining ground on the Scuderia in current races, and with six Grands Prix left, the Milton Keynes-based team recently leads by 139 points.
At their home race, Ferrari enjoyed a marginally better weekend. While Carlos Sainz advanced to fourth after starting from the back of the race owing to an engine penalty, Charles Leclerc placed P2 behind winner Max Verstappen.
After the race, Sainz stated that it was still too early to determine whether the faster speed marked a genuine turnaround or if it was just the result of the track.
“We don’t know the final conclusions on where the race pace [is] coming from,” Sainz told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“We need to keep improving. For sure, the car was better this weekend, both in race trim and [qualifying] trim, so I think we’ve taken a step towards getting to know that and that knowledge.”
Ferrari has “matured” over the season
Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto had expressed his belief that it could prove to be a challenging race for the squad before to F1’s comeback to Italy.
Sainz highlighted the team’s progress throughout what has been a difficult second half of 2022 when questioned how they were able to turn things around and show a faster speed than was expected.
“[It was a] good reaction from a team that is maturing,” the Spaniard explained.
“I think that [the team are] learning a lot from this difficult year, and I think [the team] has done a massive step compared to last year, in terms of putting [ourselves] back into winning contention.
“But we’re still doing mistakes, or we’re still learning. It’s a young team, I think, and we are young in working together.
“I think there’s been progress this year, even though it’s [been] a difficult second half of the season. I think we’re going to take a lot of knowledge from this to attack in the last few races, and to go for it next year again.”
