In the beginning of the 2022 season, Lewis Hamilton experienced “shock,” according to Andrew Shovlin of Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton has reportedly been surprised and “shocked” by Mercedes’ decline in Formula 1 competitiveness throughout the 2022 season, according to Andrew Shovlin of Mercedes.
Hamilton was anticipated to be a key challenger for the Drivers’ Championship after nearly losing the World Championship to Max Verstappen in 2021, but with with two races remaining, he and Mercedes are still unsuccessful.
The W13 design has been problematic with mechanical bouncing and porpoising, and its high drag nature has held the squad behind. A single design choice made in October 2021, which is believed to be related to the floor, is to blame for the decline in results and performance.
Since trackside engineering director Shovlin acknowledged that Hamilton had been taken aback by the poor performance, his streak of winning at least one race in every season of his F1 career is currently in jeopardy.
Shovlin on the surprise of Hamilton
As Mercedes tried to adjust to the W13 during the early part of the season, Hamilton’s performance fluctuated.
In an effort to push the team back to the front of the grid, Shovlin praised Hamilton’s effort.
“Lewis is always working hard, is super motivated and desperate to try to win,” Shovlin told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“Going from the competitive position that we’ve had in the preceding years to a really difficult car at the start of the year was a bit of a shock for him.
“It was also a bit of an adjustment for us to get used to working and effectively racing in the mid-pack for a lot of the early part of the year.
“We were having to make a lot of compromises with the car to try and get the best out of it – and then learning at the same time.”
Moving forward with force
Although he has indicated his ambition to continue racing into the age of 40, something he had recently ruled out, Hamilton’s career’s final major challenge is likely to be returning Mercedes to race victories and title contention.
Hamilton’s dedication, in Shovlin’s opinion, has also helped the squad out.
“The same as us as a team, Lewis can see that we’re definitely going in the right direction,” he said.
“We can see a clear route to getting back to a point where we can challenge for Pole Positions and wins.
“With Lewis’ commitment to the team, that’s increasing the closer we get [to that target], and his commitment to putting in the work on his side to try and help achieve those goals [is also increasing].”
